Formula: bitrate × 0.45 estimates decimal gigabytes per recording hour. We add 10% planning overhead. Actual retention changes with variable bitrate, codec, event-file protection, audio, parking mode and the card space reserved by the camera. Always confirm the manufacturer’s maximum supported capacity and use high-endurance media.
Why bitrate matters more than resolution alone
Two cameras labeled 4K can create very different file sizes because bitrate, frame rate, codec and secondary-camera settings differ. The most dependable calculation starts with the bitrate shown in the camera manual or in a real recorded file.
