Estimate storage before choosing a card
Resolution labels alone do not determine storage. Two 4K cameras can create very different file sizes because bitrate, codec, frame rate, exposure detail and the number of active channels vary. The most useful input is the average bitrate shown in the camera specification or recording settings.

The figures below are for one channel. Multiply by the number of channels when each channel records at the stated average bitrate.

Capacity is only part of choosing a dash cam card
Confirm the camera limit
A camera may not support every large capacity. Check the manufacturer’s maximum supported capacity, required file system and approved card guidance before purchasing.
Choose high endurance storage
Dash cams continuously write and overwrite video. Use a reputable card designed for sustained surveillance style recording rather than assuming an ordinary consumer card will last.
Format and inspect
Follow the camera manufacturer’s formatting schedule, review health warnings, and periodically confirm that recent files open correctly. A recording icon alone is not proof that every file is healthy.
Protect important events
Export important footage promptly. Loop recording eventually overwrites ordinary files, and protected event folders can also fill or be limited by firmware rules.
Dash cam memory questions
How much 4K dash cam footage fits on 256 GB?
There is no reliable answer from “4K” alone. Enter the actual average bitrate and channel count above. A front and rear system can consume much more than a single camera, even when only the front channel is 4K.
Does H.265 always cut storage in half?
No. Codec efficiency depends on implementation, image detail, frame rate and the bitrate selected by the manufacturer. Use the resulting bitrate rather than a universal percentage claim.
Why might the real card retain fewer hours?
Variable bitrate can rise in complex scenes, the formatted capacity is lower than the label, event files may be locked, and the camera may reserve space. The reserve option helps planning but cannot model every firmware behavior.
Should fleet operators calculate storage differently?
The same bitrate formula applies, but retention policy, evidence export, driver privacy, card inspection, replacement intervals and cloud upload workflows should be documented across every vehicle.
