Recording when your vehicle is parked

A normal dash camera usually stops recording when switched power turns off. Parking mode allows a compatible camera to remain ready for motion, impact or time lapse recording after the vehicle is parked. The exact behavior depends on the camera, hardwire kit, power source and selected settings.

Impact detection

The camera can save footage when its internal sensor detects movement associated with a bump or impact. Sensitivity must be balanced to limit unnecessary recordings.

Motion detection

Compatible systems may begin recording when movement is detected within view. Busy parking areas can create many events and increase power use.

Time lapse recording

Some cameras capture frames at set intervals to provide broader time coverage with different storage and power requirements.

Hardwire kit

The camera and kit must be compatible

Hardwire kits are not universal. Connector type, voltage conversion, fuse taps and low voltage cutoff features vary. A kit made for one camera brand may not safely support another model.

Before scheduling, provide the exact camera and hardwire kit model. If a kit has not been purchased, we can help identify the type of accessory the manufacturer specifies. We do not recommend connecting a camera to unknown or damaged power equipment.

Battery protection

Managing vehicle battery risk

A parked camera consumes energy. Compatible low voltage cutoff settings are designed to stop camera power before voltage falls below a selected threshold. This can reduce risk but cannot guarantee that a weak, aging or cold battery will always start the vehicle.

Battery condition, driving frequency, parking duration, temperature, camera consumption and cutoff settings all matter. Drivers who park for long periods or require continuous coverage may need to consider a dedicated dash camera battery pack or a different operating schedule.

2. Select power behavior

Parking mode generally requires both constant and ignition switched references. Circuit selection varies by vehicle.

3. Route and secure wiring

The power lead is routed discreetly while respecting trim, airbags and moving parts.

4. Configure settings

We review supported parking mode options, cutoff settings and the camera’s normal transition into parked operation.

5. Test operation

We confirm normal driving recording and check that the camera changes behavior when the ignition is turned off.

6. Explain limitations

You receive clear guidance about power consumption, storage, maintenance and what parking mode can and cannot capture.

Parking mode and memory cards

Parking recording adds write cycles to the memory card. A high endurance card within the camera manufacturer’s supported capacity is generally more appropriate than a basic card designed mainly for occasional file storage.

Cards should be formatted according to manufacturer guidance and checked periodically. Important clips should be saved promptly because loop recording eventually overwrites older files.

When a battery pack may be preferable

A dedicated dash camera battery pack can reduce direct reliance on the vehicle battery during parking recording. It adds cost, space and charging considerations, and it must be compatible with the camera and installation plan.

Battery packs may be worth considering for high daily mileage, extended parking coverage or vehicles where the preferred hardwire approach is not suitable.

Can any dash cam use parking mode?

No. The camera must support parking recording, and many models require a brand specific hardwire kit or compatible battery pack.

Will parking mode record all night?

It depends on the recording mode, battery condition, cutoff setting, camera power use and available storage. A hardwire installation does not guarantee a fixed recording duration.

Can parking mode drain my car battery?

Any parked camera consumes energy. Low voltage protection is intended to reduce risk, but battery health and operating conditions still matter.

Does parking mode work immediately after installation?

When the camera, kit and vehicle are compatible, we test the transition into parking behavior. Some cameras take time to enter the selected mode or require settings in an app.

Can you hardwire a front and rear dash cam?

Yes, when the dual-channel system and hardwire kit are compatible. Both camera channels normally share the main system’s power connection.
