Parking mode runtime depends on available battery energy, the camera’s average power draw, recording behavior, temperature, battery health and the low voltage cutoff. This calculator is designed for planning. It does not promise an exact number of hours because real vehicles and camera systems vary.
How the estimate is produced
Dedicated battery pack
The calculator starts with the pack’s watt hour rating, applies a planning allowance for conversion losses, then adjusts for temperature and condition. Runtime is usable watt hours divided by estimated parking mode watts.
Vehicle starter battery
Rated amp hours are converted to watt hours using system voltage. Only the selected planning percentage is treated as available, then efficiency and condition allowances are applied.
Recording behavior
Continuous buffered recording normally uses more energy than an energy saving mode. The mode factors here are planning assumptions, not manufacturer promises. Enter a measured average power draw when available.
Planning range
The result displays a range around the midpoint because camera activity, cellular accessories, cabin temperature and battery voltage are not constant.
What can shorten parking mode runtime?
- A rear or cabin camera, LTE module, WiFi or cloud connection that remains active.
- Frequent motion and impact events in a busy parking area.
- High or low cabin temperatures and an older battery.
- A conservative low voltage cutoff that correctly stops recording earlier.
- Short daily trips that do not fully recharge the starter battery or dedicated pack.
- Vehicle electrical systems that remain awake or have existing parasitic draw.
Parking mode runtime questions
Is a larger starter battery automatically safe for longer recording?
No. Capacity is only one factor. Battery age, chemistry, state of charge, temperature, cutoff voltage and the vehicle’s starting requirement all matter.
Is a dedicated dash cam battery pack better?
It separates dash cam energy demand from much of the starter battery load and can provide more predictable planning, but pack capacity, charge time, installation method and product compatibility still need verification.
Why does the calculator use a range?
A single exact runtime would create false precision. Parking events, temperature, battery condition and camera behavior change from day to day, so the range is more useful for planning.
